British Titles
British Titles
To comply with the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925, most British Titles can’t be advertised for on WantAd. This act makes it a
criminal offence to sell or buy, or to attempt to sell or buy certain British titles.
Restricted:
• Lordships of the Manor may be advertised for, as long as in response to a WantAd advert, sellers do not suggest that these manorial lordships are aristocratic titles or that the buyer will be entitled to be addressed as "Lord", "Lady" or any disallowed
titles. This is misleading and may also be in breach of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968.
Not allowed:
• Duke and Duchess; Marquess and Marchioness; Earl and Countess; Viscount and Viscountess; Baron and Baroness (called Lord and Lady of Parliament in Scotland); Knighthoods or Baronets.
